Republic Bank Mashramani Panorama Steel Pan Competition

MORE SCHOOLS PARTICIPATE THIS MASH AT THE 2013 REPUBLIC BANK MASHRAMANI PANORAMA STEEL PAN COMPETITION

The delightful sounds of Pan music filled the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday evening where a capacity crowd gathered to experience the Republic Bank Mashramani Pan-o-rama Steel Band Competition.

This event - sponsored by Republic Bank for the fifth consecutive year, as part of the Bank’s ‘Power to Make a Difference’ initiative - saw an increase in the number of competitors in the School Band Category. This favourable show of enthusiasm for the competition, prompted the organizers to hold a preliminary competition at the National Cultural Centre on February 15, 2013 as part of the Children’s Mashramani Competition. This move also exposed a wider cross section of Guyana’s children to the Steel Pan art form, thus enabling them to appreciate a style of music that forms an important part of Guyana’s cultural heritage.

This increase stems from the output of the Republic RightStart Pan Minors Music Literacy Workshop, another similar annual initiative which commenced in 2010, targeting youths throughout Guyana, with the result being an increased number of youths with both the skill and the passion for Pan.

The 2013 Mashramani Panorama Steel Band Competition featured bands competing in six categories -

  • Senior Solo
  • Junior Solo
  • Pan Duet
  • School Band
  • Church Band
  • Large Band

Judging from the spirited participation and the responses by the Steel Pan enthusiasts and supporters in attendance, a great evening was enjoyed by all.
