One hundred and thirty youths from several regions across Guyana participated in the three week Republic Bank RightStart Pan Minors Music Literacy Programme during which they learnt practical skills, Steel Pan history and music theory. The workshops were held during the period July 7 – 23, 2015 in Regions 3, 4 and 6 and was facilitated by six instructors.
Now in its sixth year, the focus of this year’s programme was the development of the technical competency of the students and building capacity in Steel Band arranging among the students with special potential in this particular area.
The workshop concluded with a special Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday, July 23, 2015 at 15:30h at the Grand Savannah Suite, Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown where the Georgetown and Region 3 participants received their certificates and provided entertainment. Similar Closing Ceremonies are being held in Buxton and Region 6.
Honourable Minister Dr. Rupert Roopnarine delivered the Feature Address while the programme overview delivered by Mr. Andrew Tyndall, Administrator of the National School of Music.
This initiative, a collaboration with the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport was first introduced to Guyana in 2010 as part of the Bank’s ‘Power to Make a Difference’ initiative.
Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited continues to play a major role in the proliferation of the local Pan culture and over the years, the youths have been outstanding in their inclination for the artform, showcasing increasing levels of skill and talent with each year’s related activities.
